Predicting Net Returns of Organic and Conventional Strawberry Following Soil Disinfestation with Steam or Steam Plus Additives

چکیده
Pre-plant methods for managing soil-borne pests and diseases are an important priority many agricultural production systems. This study investigates whether the application of steam is economically sustainable pre-plant soil disinfestation technique organic conventional strawberry (Fragaria ananassa) in California’s Central Coast region. We analyze net returns from field trials using + mustard seed meal (MSM) as treatments. ANOVA tests identify statistically significant differences revenues by treatment trial. Multivariate regressions estimate magnitude these effects. Predictive polynomial models relationships between two characteristics: maximum temperature (°C) time at ≥60 °C (minutes). For production, similar MSM has significantly higher than treatment. Cross-validated outperform sample mean prediction returns, except production. The optimal degree ranges 1–4 degrees, depending on system Results three suggest that temperatures 62–63 achieved 41–44 min maximizes may be a basis further experiments.

Predictive Control for the Optimization of Steam Soil Disinfestation
Soil disinfestation by steam is an agricultural technique that is nowadays attracting growing interest for its low ecological impact and could therefore become a viable alternative to methyl bromide, that will soon banned. The current main limitation of this treatment is due to the cost of the fuel used to generate the steam. In this paper, we present a control strategy that allows to minimize ...
متن کاملGrey-box models for steam soil disinfestation simulation
Agricultural and biological processes often involve complex phenomena that depend not only on time but also on other independent variables, like spatial coordinates. These processes are intrinsically distributed parameter systems whose modelling requires the adoption of (non linear) partial differential equation. Due to their complexity these models often involve parameters difficult to be esti...
متن کاملSteam Net Simulation with Real Control System
This master thesis has been conducted for Solvina. Solvina is a firm in Gothenburg, which among other things simulate steam nets for the paper process industry. Doing this Solvina has had to simulate not only the steam net itself, but also to simulate the control system. The purpose of this master thesis was to try to build an interface between the controller and the simulated process so that t...
متن کاملFruit and Soil Quality of Organic and Conventional Strawberry Agroecosystems
BACKGROUND Sale of organic foods is one of the fastest growing market segments within the global food industry. People often buy organic food because they believe organic farms produce more nutritious and better tasting food from healthier soils. Here we tested if there are significant differences in fruit and soil quality from 13 pairs of commercial organic and conventional strawberry agroecos...
متن کاملBuffer Zone Regulations and Alternatives to Pre-plant Soil Fumigation: Using Steam in California Strawberry Production
The number of regulations regarding pre-plant soil fumigation is increasing. Buffer zones are required for methyl bromide and chloropicrin applica tions. Choosing application blocks, methods, and rates to maximize pro fits is becoming a difficult challenge for growers. One consideration is the management of the buffer zone. We consider the costs and returns of using steam for pre-plant soil d...
